Regardless of your personal experience with sex, I believe once your child curiosity develops about sex then you need to explain sex in the simplest term (age also a factor). For example, "sex is shared between two people that has loving feels for each other", explain the importance of waiting to have sex not only for girls but boys as well (we live in such a double standard world....crazy) and masturbation. It may sounds disturbing to have conversation with your child about masturbation more so if your child happens to be a girl; however, it would benefit both boy & girl to know how the anatomy workings. By engaging in sex talk an if unwanted touching unfortunately happens your child would feel comfortable talking to about the situation (every parent wants that).
